Not everyone on board condo project

Some Guelph residents have been giving some “push back” to the idea of an 18-storey luxury condo on the riverside of their city’s downtown.
London-based Tricar Group has bought land on Macdonell Street from Co-operators Insurance, and plans to put up the roughly $30-million condo project.
Tricar vice-president, Adam Carapella, hopes to get city approval sometime this year, and then condo owners could move in two years after the shovel hits the ground.
But Carapella admits there will be some resistance to such a tall building going up in the historic downtown area.
And Guelph Ward 1 councillor, Bob Bell, tells 570 News there’s been “a little bit of push back” from some individuals who don’t feel tall structures are appropriate for downtown Guelph.
But Bell and Carapella both explain that this condo location is one of four spots in the downtown that have a special exemption under the city’s Downtown Secondary Plan.
Bell says these are exemptions for iconic, unique buildings, but they don’t necessarily need to be tall buildings.
Bell is withholding his own judgement on the project until more details about the project, and some drawings, are made available.
He says the height of the building may come down after that.
