UW gets research money

The federal government has announced more than 2.5 million dollars in grants for researchers at the University of Waterloo.
The money will pay for five local research projects, including finding a non-invasive way to detect osteoporosis and advancements in communications technologies.
Some of the projects will get support from Research in Motion.
The Minister of State for Science and Technology made the announcement at the university this morning.
Gary Goodyear says the goal is to increase research and training in areas that can enhance Canada’s economy, society and environment.
“It is focusing on that research that can come come to market and improve the lives of Canadians within a ten year time frame.”
Goodyear says the program is one example of how the government is helping to build the country’s research capacity.
“We now have reversed the brain drain. We have a brain gain in Canada, which we are very, very proud of,” he says.
The university’s grants are part of a 55 million dollar investment for more than 120 research teams across the country.
Other projects getting funding include research into the personalization of cancer treatment.
