As police continue their search for two suspects in a Kitchener murder, people living behind the trail where it happened are calling for their neighbourhood to be cleaned up.
Sixty-year old John Ferreira was stabbed to death on New Years Eve while walking along the Iron Horse Trail near West Avenue and Victoria with his 35 year old son.
Ferreira’s friend Aimee Polevoy lives behind the path where it happened.
She was shocked to find out it was Ferreira who was murdered that night because she says he was a wonderful man.
Polevoy says his death should serve as a wake-up call and she plans to ask the Crime Prevention Council to help her get the city and regional police to take proactive measures to make her neighbourhood more safe.
A number of people living behind the trail say it’s used by troublemakers at night because it is sheltered by the woods.
Polevoy suggests lighting and a heavier police presence along the trail might prevent problems there in the future.
Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr says the city is in the midst of developing a new Community Trails Master Plan which he say will address the development of criteria for the trail designs – including, where deemed appropriate, the lighting of some community trails.
