Local jobless numbers up slightly

While the chief economist at RBC Financial is calling the latest jobs report good news, analysts at Statistics Canada say the outlook for Waterloo Region is also getting better.
Even though the local jobless rate went up a third of a per cent last month and now stands at 7.8 per cent, Jason Gilmore says the longer term trend shows employment growth.
The number of people who were unemployed in the region went up by about 500 last month and the number of those working fell by 1,700.
But in the past year, Gilmore says 5,200 jobs were gained, with growth in several industries, including finance, insurance, real estate, construction and manufacturing.
He says those gains have been tempered by losses in the education and health sectors.
