Stimulus deadline extended

The federal government has pushed back its’ economic stimulus deadline.

The new deadline is Oct. 31, 2011, instead of the end of March.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement
this afternoon in Mississauga.

Harper says that will allow enough time to finish the remaining projects, adding he doesn’t expect the extension will cost the federal government any more money.

However, the work must have started and incurred eligible costs before March 31.

Kitchener Ward Two Councillor and FCM 1st vice-president, Berry Vrbanovic tells 570 News the vast majority of local projects are on track to be completed by the original deadline.

He says in light of today’s announcement they may look at some other projects that could be completed before the new deadline.
