Rogers to buy Leafs

In what would be the biggest transaction in Canadian sport history, the Toronto Star says Rogers Communications is in talks to buy the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The deal is said to be worth more than $1-billion dollars.

Rogers is the parent company of 570 News.

Citing anonymous sources, the Star says the sale would include the N-B-A’s Toronto Raptors, Toronto F-C of Major League Soccer and the Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ American Hockey League minor hockey team.

Rogers already owns the Toronto Blue Jays.

Buying a majority stake in the Maple Leafs from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan would transform Rogers into one of the top sports enterprises in North America.

Sources also tell the Star the deal would include the Leafs and Raptors T-V stations, but not Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment’s real estate holdings.

Richard Peddie, M-L-S-E’s chief executive officer, declined comment, saying this is a “shareholder matter” and he has no knowledge of it.
