Anti-idling gets active in Cambridge

The anti-idling bylaw in Cambridge grows some teeth starting today.
Up until now, the initiative was education-based, but starting today, the city will begin enforcement of the bylaw, complete with a $40 fine.
The city calls the bylaw part of its “comprehensive sustainable environmental initiatives.”
Motorists can be slapped with a ticket if they are caught idling for longer than one minute in key zones around the city.
Those areas include all Cambridge schools as well as the civic square area around City Hall.
Exemptions include emergency vehicles that are responding to calls, work vehicles with specialized machinery that must keep their engines running and vehicles assisting with wheelchair and mobility assisted devices and lifts.
