Six year old stages third annual fundraiser

Emma Ermel was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in June, 2008, when she was just four years old. A few months after learning of her illness, a TV show gave her an idea.

“She had seen a cartoon where the characters had a lemonade stand and she asked me if she could have one to raise money for the people who were looking for a cure for her diabetes,” says Amy Ermel, Emma’s mom.

Since it was November, Amy talked her daughter into a more seasonal stand — they would sell hot chocolate instead. And so that’s what Emma did.

In two years, she’s raised $2000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. And she’s back at it today.

“We’ll be at the Shopper’s Drug Mart at the Sunrise Centre in Kitchener and we’re hoping to see a lot of people out this year. It is getting colder so we’re hoping that will be a benefit for us,” Amy laughs.

Mom couldn’t be prouder of her now 6-year old daughter, calling her “an inspiration” and someone that makes her want to be a better person.

If you want to help, stop by the Sunrise Centre between Noon and 4 PM today. Hot chocolate is being sold for $2 per cup with all proceeds going directly to diabetes research.

You can count on Amy and Emma being there.

“I want to keep helping her until the day comes that we don’t have to do it anymore because they have a cure,” Amy says optimistically.
