How the homeless are dealing with the cold

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – For some of Vancouver’s most vulnerable, staying warm is a very fight for survival. And with the cold snap expected to stick around for some time, many of the city’s homeless are being forced to seek shelter.
For most people the cold is an inconvenience of having to deal with the sniffles or scrape ice off the car. But it was a busy weekend for the Union Gospel Mission as many poured in trying to stay warm.
And with the temperature potentially hitting the minus double digits in Vancouver, Derek Weiss with the UGM says the situation will likely get worse. “For now, there is enough room. We are over a normal capacity but we’ve added a new worker. We’ve been able to put people in hallways, which isn’t optimal, but for emergency situations it will do.”
In addition to three HEAT shelters opened by the City of Vancouver for the frigid weather, one homeless woman tells News1130 the best thing is to just keep moving through the night.
