Maybe it was the two referendum questions or the intriguing race for mayor.
Whatever the case, the City of Waterloo saw a surge in voter turnout as compared to the 2006 municipal election.
Turnout was over 41% as compared to under 29% four years ago.
Preliminary numbers for Kitchener show a slight increase to 28% from 25% in 2006.
Turnout in Cambridge was just under 29%, up from 26% four years ago.
