CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – A Chilliwack couple that pleaded guilty to animal cruelty have been handed a 5-year ban on owning pets, and they were each fined $300. Bob and Brandie Ganzeveld were charged after their two dogs and their horse were abandoned on their rental property.
Marcie Moriarty with the BC SPCA says enforcing that ban on owning pets is a challenge because there are only 25 animal cruelty investigators to cover the whole province.
“Many people might not know this, but of the $2.2 million that we spend each year on animal cruelty investigations, zero of that is provincial funding,” she points out.
She notes stiffer penalties are now being handed out on these types of investigations thanks to a Crown prosecutor who is solely dedicated to animal cruelty cases.
