The family is a changing

There’s a new first for Canada. This nation is home to more unmarried than married adults.
The statistic is in the Vanier Institute of the Family’s latest report, which found that in 2006, only 48 per cent of adults were married.
Some people in Waterloo Region say the trend could be explained by a changing society, with fewer people willing to compromise.
Others suggest it’s too easy to end a marriage these days. Divorce is so common, they say fewer couples are willing to stick it out through thick and thin.
Common law families are the fastest growing family type and common-law couples with children are the fastest growing group.
Twenty years ago, 81 per cent of children under 15 were living with legally married parents.
In 2006, that figure dropped to just below 66 per cent.
And in that time frame, the proportion of children living with common-law parents tripled.
