The long gun registry has survived on Parliament Hill, but opponents say the MPs who flip flopped on the vote will not.
John Evers with the East Elgin Gun Association says the MPs who voted against their constituents’ beliefs will be tossed out.
But before the registry becomes an election issue, Christiane Sadeler with the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council says the public must be better informed on the issue.
She says the government must look at the evidence on whether the registry is useful and then let the voters decide.
Supporters of the registry, including Ray Massicotte, head of the Waterloo Regional Police Association, say they are pleased with yesterday’s results.
However, Massicotte says this should be an opportunity for the government to look at it and try to improve it to make it an even better tool to keep Canadians safe.
The federal long-gun registry survived after a critical vote in the House of Commons which saw
MP’s vote 153-151 today to kill a Conservative private member’s bill to scrap the program.
The Harper Conservatives are warning the opposition that the issue will be part of the next federal election campaign.
The Liberals have promised to amend the program if they form a government, while the NDP have pledged to introduce a bill calling for changes this fall.
