The Jeff Skinner era in Kitchener may soon be over.
Skinner, the Rangers’ high flying forward was the top pick of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes in the past draft and all reports suggest he’s more than held his own with the big club during training camp.
And, the the Raleigh newspaper says he has “been all but guaranteed a spot on the team.”
Now, according to the Hurricanes website, the team has scheduled a news conference for noon today. It calls it a “big day” for the club and says it’s to announce a player signing.
That player, the ‘Canes say, will be in their line up when they take on Florida in their exhibition opener tonight.
Skinner scored 50 goals and collected 90 points in 64 regular season games last year for the Rangers and added another 20 goals in the playoffs.
He was named MVP of Team Orr at the 2010 Top Prospects Game after recording a goal and an assist and was also crowned the winner of the creative breakaway skills competition.
Skinner also played for the gold medal-winning Team Ontario at the 2009 World Under-17 Challenge, scoring the game-winning goal against Russia in the championship final.
The 5′ 10″ centre was the 7th overall selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Hurricanes.
