United Way target $6 million plus

It’s the biggest fundraising event of the year for the United Way, and it needs your help.

United Way campaign chair, Lisa Drew, our 570 News morning anchor, says the goal of the Fall Workplace Campaign this year is over $6 million, to go toward a three-year goal of $21 million.

The first year of the campaign last year raised $5.3 million, Lisa says, adding she knows the community of Waterloo Region is giving and caring enough to do better.

United Way K-W CEO, Jan Varner, tells 570 News their finances aren’t giving them the same “yikes!” feeling it did when the three-year campaign started.

She says things have picked up considerably, though there is still some hesitation from corporate donors over the pace of the country’s economic recovery.

Also today, the United Way launched its first annual Day of Caring, where teams of volunteers work hands-on at one of the United Way’s sponsored agencies.

Lisa Drew, with Tara Connors from the CHYM FM morning show, Bill Hart from the KIX 106 morning show, plus a slew of other volunteers from our Rogers Kitchener Radio Group, will be giving the ROOF homeless shelter for youth a good scrub down.

21 teams signed up for various projects, but Varner says many teams are organizing informally, and there may be up to 200 volunteers out working today.
