Students who bring their cellphones to class may soon no longer have to worry about sneaking it in.
The Premier has suggested at an educational conference on technology that the devices may be useful as a teaching tool.
Some students in Waterloo Region say they tend to focus more on texting than on what they’re being taught, so bringing cell phones into their learning environment works.
Premier Dalton McGuinty says the devices could be used to access information online.
Mary Lou Mackie with the Waterloo Region District School Board welcomes the idea, saying finding a productive use for cellphones could engage children in productive learning.
But John Shewchuk with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board says they would have to make sure teachers monitor students to make sure they aren’t distracted by it.
He says they would also have to decide at what age the technology should be introduced.
Shewchuk also says cellphones could be a safety concern if students are texting incorrect information during a lockdown at their school.
