570 News has entered into a partnership that will provide you with all of the information you need leading up to next month’s municipal election. Beginning today, 570 News and Rogers TV (Cable 20) will broadcast more than 40 candidates’ debates.
“Rogers TV and 570 News are working to help residents of Waterloo Region make an informed choice for the election (on October 25th),” says Charles Wechsler, Acting Station Manager for Rogers TV, Grand River Region.
The debates will air for 30 or 60 minutes and they will all be live, providing listeners and viewers the chance to ask questions of their own.
“We will be encouraging people to call in with their questions, we’ll have an e-mail opportunity and we’re also going to be establishing Twitter accounts. So if people want to use that method to send in their questions, we can accept them that way as well,” Wechsler explains.
The debates will follow a traditional all-candidates forum with a moderator and a series of panelists, including a reporter from 570 News. Candidates will be given one minute for opening statements, followed by questions from the panel. If a candidate is mentioned in another candidate’s response, that candidate will be offered an opportunity for rebuttal. The debate will end with closing comments from each of the candidates.
The debates are scheduled to run at 7 or 9 PM, Monday through Thursday, up until the week before the election. If you miss the live airing, Wechsler says you shouldn’t be concerned.
“We know people’s schedules are busy so each of these debates will probably be repeated 4-5 times over the ensuing 24 hours, at different times of the day,” he says.
