The Federal Finance Minister used a high tech company in Kitchener today to highlight government measures aimed at attracting foreign investment.
Jim Flaherty told a small crowd at Communitech this morning that high tech companies in Waterloo Region
are a symbol of the progress Canada has made.
He also promoted the government’s move in the 2010 budget to eliminate tax reporting for some investments into Canadian corporations, saying it enhances the ability of businesses to attract foreign venture capital.
Flaherty also says Canadians have every reason to be confident our country has weathered the global downturn in the economy.
He dropped by the 570 News studios as well for an appearance on 570’s Jeff Allan Show.
Flaherty says the stimulus plan initiated to help stave off the recession appears to be working.
The deadline for municipalities to use up all their stimulus funding has been set for the end of this fiscal year which is March 31st, 2011.
Flaherty also says there is a chance the enhanced EI program will be extended.
But he adds that it’s time for Canada’s economic action plan to wind down.
As of Saturday, Ottawa will cancel an extra five weeks of regular EI benefits and stop providing up to an extra 20 weeks for longer serving employees.
