Last long weekend of summer

As people celebrate the last long weekend of the summer and a return to school, police will be out patrolling the roads for speeders and drunk drivers.

Provincial police will put more resources on the highways to nab drivers who disobey the law.

OPP Sergeant Dave Woodford says people need to take extra time and focus on their driving.

With college and university students moving back for school, Woodford says they will also be looking for rental trailers that aren’t properly secured.

In town, Waterloo Regional Police says they will be keeping a close eye on the university area, setting up ride checks to make sure people who drink aren’t driving.

Last year, on provincially patrolled roads in the region, Cambridge OPP laid more than 100 charges, including 52 for speeding.

And with this summer being so hot and warm, Woodford says there were more people on the roads and more crashes.

He says July numbers were higher than he’s seen in a while, with 12 deaths on the Canada Day long weekend alone.
