Fire hits Guelph school

The school year begins in just over two weeks, but for students at St. Michael’s School in Guelph, it’s not clear where exactly they will be attending classes.
The school, on McElderry Road, sustained heavy damage yesterday afternoon after a fire broke out on the roof.
It’s believed to have been sparked accidentally as workers were fixing the roof.
One firefighter was taken to hospital for heat exhaustion and released later in the evening.
12 children attending a summer camp in the school all got out safely.
The Wellington Catholic District School Board is assessing the situation and working on contingency plans, if necessary.

The fire sent large plumes of black smoke into the air in the south end of Guelph, and police asked people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed.
