Habitat begins new build

Habitat for Humanity Waterloo region’s latest build has officially begun in Kitchener.
The 16-unit townhouse condos slated for Howe Drive in the Ottawa and Westmount area is a unique achievement for the local Habitat.
The complex will be the first to include one-bedroom units for single parents and a unit that is fully wheelchair accessible.
Habitat’s executive director Ken Freeman says this build will accommodate families of different sizes, including single parents.
He says they’re getting away from building single family homes because they are too expensive and with intensification, land is too scarce.
When the units are completed in three years or so, they will house about sixty people.
Two of those residents will be Penny Harvey and her daughter Georgina.
Harvey says this project proves that if you work hard, anything is possible.
She will contribute more than 250 hours towards the construction of her new home.
Each condo requires 15 volunteers per townhouse per day over a period of seven weeks.
Freeman says they have enough to meet that requirement for the next three weeks, but after that, they will be looking for more help.
