Regional roads are safer

In a report to the Planning and Works Committee today, staff say several factors saw improvement last year compared to 2008.

Those factors include:

• the total number of reported collisions decreased by 4.9% (5823 in 2008 to 5547 in 2009);
• the percentage of reported collisions involving drivers who had consumed alcohol decreased by
1% (from 3% in 2008 to 2% in 2009);
• the number of collisions involving pedestrians decreased from 119 in 2008 to 98 in 2009;
• there were 5 horse-drawn vehicles involved in collisions on the Regional road system in 2009,
compared to 6 in 2008;
• the number of collisions involving cyclists decreased from 128 in 2008 to 105 in 2009;
• the number of injury collisions decreased from 1,359 in 2008 to 1,196 in 2009; and
• the number of fatal collisions decreased from 11 in 2008 to 9 in 2009.
