After 85 days and nearly 700 million litres of oil, B-P says it has finally choked off the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
The company has placed a carefully fitted cap over the runaway well that has been gushing crude into the Gulf since April 20th.
It’s only a temporary fix, but it’s being greeted with hope and high expectations from residents along the U-S the Gulf Coast.
If the cap holds, the sea floor doesn’t crack and relief wells being prepared are successfully, this could be the beginning of the end for the spill.
Tests are being run on the cap to see if it can hold back the oil.
B-P chief operating officer Doug Suttles cautions that the flow could resume and this is not the time to celebrate.
U-S President Barack Obama calls yesterday’s development “a positive sign.”
