It’s going to be another broiler today here in the region as a heat wave roasting eastern North America sizzles on.
Temperatures in southern Ontario and Quebec will again rise to the low 30’s, although with the humidity, it’ll feel more like the low 40’s.
570 News weather specialist John Wilson says the smog and humidex advisories will continue today under mostly sunny skies. It will be hazy, hot and humid in the region with only a slight chance of an isolated late-afternoon shower. The guaranteed high is 33 degrees but with the humidex 41. The record was 36.0 in 1988.
Overnight it will be hazy and humid with a low of only 22 degrees.
As for tomorrow the smog and humidex advisories continue with increasing cloud. Again it will be hazy, hot and humid with a growing chance of late-day showers or a non-severe thunderstorm with a high of 32 degrees. The humidex will push it to near 40.
But, on Friday Wilson is calling for all of the advisories to end. An early shower is likely, then partly sunny and cooler in the afternoon with a more manageable high of 25 degrees.
Smog accompanying the heat has health officials warning people with cardiac or respiratory problems to take special care.
Their advice for beating the heat is simple — stay hydrated, find a cool place to chill out, and go easy on the physical activity.
Cranked up air conditioners are boosting electricity usage, but Hydro officials in Ontario and Quebec say the power grid can easily handle it.
South of the border, record temperatures nearing 40 degrees along the Eastern Seaboard are now blamed for at least two deaths, and for slowing commuter rail traffic.
The forecast has the high heat hanging in until at least Friday.
