P-M announces new fellowship program

Prime Minister Harper announced a new fellowship program during a visit to Waterloo’s Perimeter Institute.

The aim is to develop and bring the best postdoctoral researchers to Canada.

Ottawa will spend 45 million dollars over five years on the 70 new Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships.

P-M Harper was joined by world famous physicist Stephen Hawking for the announcement.

Hawking is conducting research at the Perimeter Institute for theoretical physics through the month of July.

Harper also announced support for a initiative to encourage and develop the best young minds in Africa.

The Next Einstein Initiative will create a network of 15 centres of academic excellence across Africa in fields related to science and technology.
