Almost every seat on the Boeing 737 was filled when the very first Waterloo Region to Vancouver flight took to the skies this morning.
570’s Mark Douglas was among the 112 passengers on the maiden flight of WestJet’s new seasonal service.
General Manager of Waterloo Region International Airport, Chris Wood, tells 570 News whether WestJet makes it a permanent service is up to local passengers.
On the plane today were Todd, Sara and their three kids, who all came from Walkerton to use Waterloo Airport.
Todd says they avoid Toronto’s Pearson Airport as much as possible.
And he doesn’t mind the 7am departure, saying he prefers to start out early.
His wife Sara says the 11:42pm return time won’t be a problem for their three young kids: they’ll just sleep on the plane.
Every passenger who spoke with 570 News praised the Waterloo Region International Airport for being so much more convenient and easier to use than Pearson International in Toronto.
There were few business travellers on the maiden flight.
Wood says the hours of the scheduled flights to and from Vancouver should land more business travellers though for WestJet.
The Boeing 737 leaves Waterloo at 7:00 a.m., landing 9:30 a.m. Vancouver time. The return flight leaves at roughly 4:30 p.m. Vancouver time, giving business travellers a full day in that city.
The return flight lands at 11:42 p.m.
