On the heels of last week’s rosy jobs numbers, a new employment survey suggests there is still more work to be found in our region. Manpower Canada is reporting a positive hiring climate over the next three months in K-W and Cambridge. Manpower’s numbers indicate 18% of local employers plan to hire staff in the third quarter (July-September) while another 77% plan to maintain their current staffing levels. Only 5% are forecasting cutbacks which leaves a net employment outlook of 13%. That’s a 7% increase over the same period a year ago and an increase of three percentage points over the outlook in the second quarter.
Brooke Worthman in Manpower’s Kitchener office says it’s another sign of economic recovery. Worthman tells 570 News the jobs, while covering the period of July-September, are not just summer jobs. She says many positions will extend beyond September, indicating that people are being hired on more of a long-term basis. Worthman says construction is a real growth sector right now, along with solar energy and other environmentally-friendly sectors. The office/professional sector is also trending higher. Worthman believes the positive hiring climate is indicative of employers beginning to add new staff after staying lean for so long during the recession.
Nationally, Manpower finds 22% of employers surveyed have plans to add staff in the third quarter, while 6% are planning cutbacks. Mining and construction reported the most favourable results nationally, followed by Wholesale and Retail Trade.
