Guelph city council will allow a Sikh temple to be built in the south end of the city, despite opposition from the neighbourhood.
Councillors voted 10 to 1 in favour of the application for Clair Road between Tolton Drive and Victoria Road. A neighbourhood association had been fighting the temple for months over concerns about increased traffic, noise, lighting and whether the building is compatible with the residential area.
The temple will be built in two phases and when finished, will be almost 6,500 square feet. It will feature five domes on top of the roof, the highest reaching 57 feet above ground or about five stories.
City staff say the domes can be seen from the second floor of the homes that border the property. The applicant previously agreed to limit the height of the building.
The Sikh community also agreed to turn lights off overnight, and add trees and landscaping as a buffer between their property and neighbouring homes.
After approving the development, Council voted to include the public in the site plan process. That process may involve capping the building’s capacity at 400.
