A number of U of T med students are getting a taste of practicing medicine in a smaller environment.
Former Chief of Staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Dr. Jim Snyder, is one of a number of doctors instructing a handful of students from the big city at CMH this week for Rural Medicine Week.
Snyder says no, Cambridge isn’t really “rural”, but the students didn’t have to travel far to come here, and a truly rural hospital may not have the staff and facilities to show the kids everything CMH can.
Student, Joe Pontoriero says in Cambridge he shadowed a plastic surgeon, and followed a family doctor in a clinic for a day.
Student, Joanne Leung says everyone here has done a great job in getting the students to fall in love with Cambridge, and she could imagine herself setting up a family practice there.
Today’s session involved learning how to suture skin and tendons by practising on pigs feet.
Aside from the suturing, students today had one-on-one lessons with a family doctor in delivering babies.
