The David Johnston era at the University of Waterloo will end about a year from now.
Johnston is stepping down as U-of-W president after 12 years and an opinion piece in today’s Toronto Star suggests he shouldn’t be ruled out as a candidate for Canada’s next Governor General.
The article – written by the paper’s National Affairs columnist James Travers – suggests Johnston is most definitely on the Harper government’s radar.
Johnston was chosen by the Prime Minister himself to write the terms of reference for the inquiry probing the business dealings of Brian Mulroney and Karlheinz Schreiber.
However, a spokesman for Johnston says Mr. Johnston will not comment on speculation that he may be being considered to be Canada’s next Governor General.
Speaking on behalf of Johnston, the University’s media relations officer – Michael Strickland – tells 570 news Johnston will not address the story. Strickland says Johnston is unaware of the source of the speculation.
