24th Annual Torch Run

If you saw 200 police officers running down the street today, don’t worry, it wasn’t an emergency.

Waterloo Regional Police were running this morning for the 24th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of the Special Olympics.

Special Events Coordinator, Catherine Wilkinson says police officers are very dedicated to this particular cause; some will come in on their day off just to take part in the run.

Roughly 200 police officers started runs from Waterloo, Kitchener, and the Cambridge detachments, converging around noon at Police Headquarters with the arrival of the Flame of Hope.

Wilkinson says Regional Police hold this event in partnership with the RCMP, OPP, Canada Revenue, and of course, some special Olympians join in on the run and the barbecue at the end.

The Torch Run has raised over a quarter of million dollars locally since it was first launched.
