Canada’s mayors are calling on all parties in the House of Commons to commit to a new partnership to address national challenges that are weakening cities.
Kitchener Mayor and Chair of the Big City Mayors’ Caucus Carl Zehr made the announcement during a news conference in Toronto this afternoon.
He says the partnership would help cities fight traffic gridlock, homelessness, climate change, and the infrastructure deficit.
Zehr says it shouldn’t take an economic crisis to get governments working together.
He says stimulus spending brought all levels of government together to create jobs and it has helped municipalities repair some of the damage caused by under investment.
But he adds that there is more to do.
As a first step, Zehr says the mayors will jointly host and participate in a national infrastructure summit in Regina in January 2011.
Zehr says that summit will establish an intergovernmental strategy for eliminating infrastructure deficit.
