Remember fireworks safety this Victoria Day long weekend

KITCHENER – The City of Kitchener is reminding residents of the importance of fireworks safety on the upcoming Victoria Day weekend.
Flyers are being distributed to local businesses that sell fireworks, outlining the city’s regulatory requirements, as well as the “Do’s and Don’ts” of fireworks. A copy of the flyer can be found on the city’s website at www.kitchener.ca
Under the City of Kitchener Municipal Code, fireworks can only be set off on Victoria Day and Canada Day and the day immediately before and after Victoria Day and Canada Day. In 2010, the allowable dates are May 23, 24 and 25; and June 30, July 1 and 2. Fireworks cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 18.
Residents should be aware that, under the Code, fireworks shall not be set off:
On any city street or highway; In any woodlot, public trail, or ballpark; In any parkland under the jurisdiction of the City of Kitchener without first having obtained a permit to do so; Within 25 feet of any building or structure; In areas containing dead undergrowth or trees.
Firecrackers – which are different than fireworks and include items like cherry bombs and torpedoes – cannot be sold or set off anywhere in Kitchener.
“Fireworks can be a lot of fun, but if they’re not used safely, they can cause tragic accidents,” said Shayne Turner, the city’s director of enforcement. “These regulations are in place to keep residents safe.”
When setting off fireworks, always:
Use fireworks outdoors only;
Choose a clear, open area;
Check wind direction and speed;
Always have an adult present;
Have water handy;
Use eye protection and wear non-flammable clothing;
Read and follow label directions;
Keep spectators at least 20 metres from launch area;
Wait 30 minutes after display has ended and dispose of fireworks properly (soak in water then dispose in trash bin).
Never:
Experiment with homemade own fireworks;
Give fireworks to small children;
Light more than one firework at a time, or relight “duds;”
Throw or point fireworks at other people;
Carry fireworks in your pocket;
Shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
