Waterloo regional police are offering a new service that allows local residents to find out where certain crimes have been committed.
The police website offers icons on maps that navigators can zoom in on. The icons represent 15 different types of crime, including assault and break-ins. The maps are updated every two weeks but to protect the victims of crime, they do not give exact locations.
Chair of the police services board Tom Galloway says the service allows people who live in a neighbourhood where there may have been a string of break-ins to be more cautious with locking their doors or cars.
He says the idea for the service developed out of requests from residents who want to know more about what is happening in the community.
But Galloway says until now, that information was not easily accessible.
