The region’s Catholic school board is using earth week to celebrate the energy savings it has made over the past year.
Last summer, all 52 schools installed motion-activated light sensors and a spokesperson from the board says the system has reduced their energy use by 15 percent.
That reduction is the equivalent of removing 606 cars from the road or saving almost 62 hundred barrels of crude oil.
The schools have also reduced photocopying by 14 percent and purchased double-sided printers to save paper.
