Fire Marshal begins investigation into Campus Court Fire

An Office of the Fire Marshal spokesperson expects to complete their investigation into a $2-million fire in Waterloo in ten days at the most, but only after they get inside.

The early-morning blaze Thursday destroyed several businesses at the retail plaza at 140 University Ave. W., but caused no injuries.

OFM Supervisor Bill Hiscott, at the scene of the blaze, tells 570 News it will still be a few days until the structure is made safe enough for investigators to get inside and look around.

When they do get inside, Hiscott says it will be a matter of going through the debris, one shovel at a time looking for evidence of the cause of the fire.

In the meantime, he and his staff are reviewing the statements and observations collected from the firefighters who responded to the devastating fire.

Hiscott says once they get in the investigation could take as little as a few days, or seven to ten days at most, depending on what they find.

Today, a back hoe, bulldozer, and work crews are tearing down and clearing away the most heavily damaged sections of the plaza.
