Germany’s aviation authority broke the flight deadlock Monday, granting an exception for Lufthansa to fly 50 long-haul planes carrying about 15,000 passengers back home using visual flight rules.
Britain chimed in with more good news, saying flight restrictions over Scottish airspace will be lifted Tuesday morning and other British airports could reopen later that day as well.
The airline industry says claims to have lost at least $1 billion due to five days of closed airports.
Local travellers are being advised to be patient and call ahead before leaving for the airport.
