Force not looking for 77 officers

Reports earlier this week stated that Waterloo Regional Police Chief Matt Torigian was looking to hire 77 new officers.

But the Region’s top cop tells 570 News his comments were taken out of context, and that an infusion of that many officers wouldn’t be healthy for the WRPS, not to mention cost prohibitive.

He adds asking for more doesn’t make sense given the service didn’t get the number of officers they asked for last year.

Chief Torigian says a new organizational methodology looks at becoming more pro-active as a force than re-active.
