Housing starts up in March

The local home construction sector continues to show signs of recovery.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says housing starts in Waterloo Region were up in March.

It says construction started on 185 homes last month, up from 148 in March of 2009.

Work on single-detached homes led the way, with starts totalling 90 units, up from 71.

C-M-H-C Senior Market Analyst Erica McLerie tells 570 News the trend is expected to continue, in part, because some have moved up their home buying intentions fearing a hike in interest rates this summer and the introduction of the H-S-T.

March was the cap on a very strong first quarter in the region.

Starts for the first three months of this year totalled 574 units, up from 341 in the January to March period last year.
