New officers get their badges

Waterloo Regional Police have formally welcomed their newest constables to the ranks.

A badge ceremony was held at Wilfrid Laurier University this afternoon.

The nine newest offivers include a former plumber, environmental technologist, and an insurance adjustor.

In his speech, Police Chief Matt Torigian says their varied backgrounds will serve them well and help the force better represent the community it serves.

Torigian also mentioned the recent deaths of OPP Constable Vu Pham and others, saying they serve as a tragic reminder of the small things that can keep officers safe.

Torigian says the challenge for police and new constables is two-fold.

He says they must build trust with traffic violators, while at the same time be aware of the dangers.
