Nuclear power addressed in Waterloo

The former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations says that if we neglect nuclear issues, we will be living on borrowed time.
Louise Frechette told a crowd of about 80 people in Waterloo Monday night that eliminating nuclear weapons programs requires a strong international consensus.
Frechette says it would involve developing a universal nuclear regime with equal rights for all countries.
She says nuclear power houses need to be ready to relinquish their right to develop nuclear weapons because all countries should have the same rights and obligations.
Frechette says a civilian nuclear program offers a useful cover for illegitimate activities.
She also says more technical assistance needs to be provided to countries developing nuclear energy programs.
This is a pivotal year for nuclear issues, with a special summit later next month.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has also announced that nuclear issues will be part of the discussions at the G-8 summit in Canada.
