Local top public sector earners

The University of Waterloo’s President has once again topped the local list of public sector workers who earn more than 100 thousand dollars a year.
David Johnston took home more than 485 thousand dollars last year, up almost 20 thousand from the year before.
Close behind was the head of Grand River Hospital, Malcom Maxwell, who pulled in just over 469 thousand dollars in 2009.
That’s up from 340 thousand in 2008, an increase that can be explained by bonuses he received from the previous two years.
The third biggest public sector earner in the region is John Tibbits, the head of Conestoga College, who earned 350 thousand dollars last year.
The former head of Cambridge Memorial Hospital Julia Dumanian made 336 thousand dollars last year.
The head of St. Mary’s received 258 thousand dollars.
More than one hundred and fifty staff with Waterloo Regional Police made over 100 thousand dollars last year, including Chief Matt Torigian at 208 thousand.
In education, the head of Waterloo Region District School Board, Linda Fabi made 196 thousand dollars in 2009.
The Director of the Catholic board, Roger Lawler, pulled in 179 thousand.
Max Blouw, the president of Wilfrid Laurier University, made 318 thousand dollars.
At the municipal level, regional chair Ken Seiling made 149 thousand dollars.
Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr earned 143 thousand dollars, Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig pulled in 132 thousand and Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran made 130 thousand dollars.
The highest paid municipal employees in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge were the chief administrative officers, earning between 164 and 196 thousand dollars.
