Board votes to demolish Grand View Public School

Grand View Public School in Cambridge is a step closer to being demolished.
The public school board has voted to construct a new school on that site and then tear down the old one, which was built in the 1920s.
Opponents wanted the old school saved, but the board decided renovations would be too costly.
This morning’s Record quotes Board chair Mike Ramsay as saying trustees “put kids first” with their decision and “It’s very clear that Grand View school is not an optimum learning environment.”
The price tag for the new school is $7-million while renovations would cost at least $4.6-million.
However, the repair figure would most certainly rise as officials discovered new problems as they inspected the old school.
The demolition is not yet a done deal.
The city could slap a provincial Heritage Act designation on it which could result in a demolition permit being rejected, although council has not threatened that action so far.
