Waterloo City Council is considering a recommendation tonight that would see a boost in salaries for both the mayor and councillors.
The recommendation from a consultant’s report and citizens’ committee calls for a six percent hike.
That would bring Mayor Brenda Halloran’s base salary up to $71,000 from $67,000 and councillors to $29,000 from $25,000.
All this comes as the premier calls on municipal police and firefighters to accept a wage freeze.
Dalton McGuinty says all public-sector workers need to do their part to bring down Ontario’s massive deficits.
More than one-million public-sector workers were put on salary-freeze alert in last week’s provincial budget.
Municipalities were not included in the call, but McGuinty is urging them to do the same — and for police and firefighters to co-operate.
