Local residents are being asked to conserve energy for earth hour Saturday night.
Wilf Meston with Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro says they saw energy levels drop by about six per cent in the region during earth hour last year.
Between 8:30 and 9:30-pm local time tomorrow, residents are being asked to turn off their lights and plug out their appliances in an effort to conserve.
Meston says the global event puts a renewed focus on energy conservation and on developing energy saving habits.
A province-wide poll by the IESO found 75 per cent of respondents plan to participate this year, up from 50 per cent last year.
Earth hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when more than two million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.
