Loonie looks for parity

Our loonie continues to flirt with parity with the U-S dollar.

The Canadian dollar was trading around 99 cents this afternoon.

The head of the K-W Chamber of Commerce mentioned the dollar rising and it’s impact on local tourism at a Confederation Club luncheon at the Delta Hotel in Kitchener on Thursday.

Joan Fisk says that because we are living in a global economy, we are not relying as much on American tourism alone.

She says Canada’s tourism industry needs to market itself to attract visitors from other countries.

Fisk also says our region is in a position to lead the country in growth and prosperity.

Fisk says Waterloo Region is expected to exceed provincial and national growth levels over the next two years.

She addressed the doctor shortage too – saying that students of McMaster University’s satellite medical school in Kitchener will graduate soon.

By 2012, 450 students will have received medical training here and studies have shown a high percentage of physicians tend to practice where they are trained.
