Grand River and St Mary’s Hospitals are looking to improve patient safety with a new Surgical Safety Checklist.
Michelle Wilhelm is the education practice leader for Grand River’s Operating Room. She tells 570 News, it’s one of the last things the team does before they put the patient to sleep.
She says they ask the patient their name and what procedure they’re having done. Then the team makes sure they have everything they need to do the surgery efficiently and safely.
Wilhelm says there’s also a debriefing after the surgery where the team looks at how they did, and where the patient is going after surgery.
Wilhelm says this checklist will be mandated by the government starting in July but Grand River and St. Mary’s wanted to start sooner than that. The list was originally developed by the World Health Organization and can be slightly personalized for each hospital.
