Construction on skateboard park to begin next spring

Waterloo city council has settled on the location for a long-awaited skateboarding and BMX park but it will take longer than expected to build.

The $400,000 facility has been in the works for a few years.

It will be built along Father David Bauer Drive across from the Waterloo Memorial Recreation complex, but construction will not start until the spring of next year.

It was supposed to start in the fall of this year.

City staff will look at setting up temporary skateboarding facilities to make up for the delay at a cost of up to $20,000.

Some people living in the area are worried about noise, public safety and aesthetics but city staff say they will address those concerns.

It’s estimated that about 4,000 people are active skateboarders in the city of Waterloo.
