Diabetes project at U-W

Taking diabetes research science from the lab to the bedside.

That’s why the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has picked the University of Waterloo to coordinate a massive new clinical human research trial project.

JDRF President and CEO, Andrew McKee, tells 570 News this will be the Foundation’s “latest and greatest” such project.

McKee says each trial can involve anywhere from thirty to six hundred people.

The University of Waterloo will conduct two actual trials, but the bulk of the school’s work will be coordinating and managing all the data.

Most trials will be conducted at McMaster University in Hamilton, and McKee says soon they’ll invite others schools and hospitals throughout Southwestern Ontario to participate.

McKee adds, they also picked UW for its computing, engineering, and even its quantum engineering expertise — that to possibly help miniaturize treatment devices.

UW President, David Johnston, says dozens of new research jobs will be created with this project, with many more spin-off jobs beyond that.

The project is funded by $20-million dollars from Ottawa, announced last Fall, along with over $13-million dollars from the JDRF.
