Waterloo votes in favour of merger question

Waterloo City Council has voted in favour of putting a question on this fall’s municipal election ballot asking residents if they support merger talks with the City of Kitchener.
The vote – 6 to 2 in favour – follows two previous failed bids to take the issue to the people.
Mayor Brenda Halloran, who tabled the latest motion, stresses this does not mean amalgamation is inevitable.
She tells 570 News it’s simply asking if residents want to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such a move.
Councillor Ian McLean agrees, saying even if the question is on the ballot and approved by voters the discussion would be lengthy and any final decision on amalgamation would require another vote from residents.
Kitchener approved having the question on its ballot several weeks ago, but in both cases, the province must give its approval before any referendum can take place.
